She taught grade 2 or 3, whatever, but when I passed grade 1 I hoped I didn't have her. Always a mean one on the playground etc. Maybe wrong, but glad to have Miss Thompson who was just the opposite. :)Army42https://www.blogger.com/profile/12887907781014742846noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7127420739337011079.post-73108058280069964132022-08-15T07:37:07.551-07:002022-08-15T07:37:07.551-07:00Thank you for a very complete article. From what I was told, they were fortunate and the great depression did not effect them economically. My grandmother told me stories of hungry men waiting at a back picnic table and her mother would feed them. The reason I was told they left Guelph, was the weather. Glady's did not enjoy the harsh winters and missed the English weather. Thomas had heard that BC's weather was similar to England. They packed up the 6 kids (2 additional children were born in BC), 2 German sheppards and headed to BC. My grandmother was 13,and the trip was a huge adventure. No mention is made of a swim. Even so, this seems like the only time he might have engaged in a "Spur of the moment" swim at the Guelph "Y", so I will assume it happened then until I find out otherwise.Cameron Shelleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13955793238851330677noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7127420739337011079.post-13859306732843757992020-10-28T06:13:32.244-07:002020-10-28T06:13:32.244-07:00Terrific story, Jon! Perhaps that is when he swam in the Y pool??? In 1972 I had a summer job cutting grass for the Niagara Parks Commission in my hometown of Niagara Falls. I worked from a commission depot at the Niagara Glen, north of the falls, and travelled to the worksites in a parks commission pickup truck driven by an elderly man I only knew as George. He was a bit gruff, but friendly enough when you got to know him. He died suddenly one night that summer and it was only then that I learned I had been working with George Young, one of the great Canadian athletes of all time. I had read about his Catalina swim in the 1957 book Great Days in Canadian Sport, by Henry Roxborough, but had no idea he was living in the same city. <br />Jon Fear in KitchenerJon Fearhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01975671512812824918noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7127420739337011079.post-17460266780264987662020-08-31T08:26:55.768-07:002020-08-31T08:26:55.768-07:00Bitte sehr.
